Afterimages: Pop Art and Beyond from the Fisher and SFMOMA Collections
March 5, 2022
Opening in phases over the coming months, this exhibition examines how the cultural currents of the 1960s continue to shape the American consciousness today. From Andy Warhol’s portraits and Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ curtain of golden beads to Vija Celmin’s photorealist paintings and Kerry James Marshall’s memorializing tableaus, the first series of thematic galleries brings together artists and ideas associated with Pop art with later generations. Each highlights how artists have addressed celebrity and consumer culture, explored media representations of war and conflict, and reflected on personal and public forms of mourning and commemoration. This presentation will expand in the fall to explore the resonances that other cultural and artistic movements of the 1960s find today.
