Intimacy - Austalian Centre for Contemporary Art
Artists contemplate feelings of loss, loneliness, passion love and longing that embody intimate human relations in a new group exhibition at ACCA opening on October 7.
Intimacy features a selection of major works by some of the world's leading contemporary artists who, through film, text, drawings and photography, explore the complex nature ot relationshlps between lovers, spouses, parents and their children as well as other more elusive encounters.
The exhibtion includes works by:
New York's much loved non-american artist Louis Bourgeois, fresh from major international restrospective which opened at Londons Tate Modern then moved to Centre Pompidou in Paris and was recently launched at New Yorks Guggenheim Museum. Bourgeois has been an integral part of New Yorks art scene since the late 1940s and has spent decades documenting her childhood through art, working through trauma of her fathers long-term affair with her governess. Intimacy will feature the work 10am is when you come to me, a folio of drawings reflecting the daily arrival of the artist's assistant and friend Jerry Gorovoy.
Pioneering art photographer and film-maker Nan Goldln. Known for her documtntary style photographs capturtng New York Bowery's hard drug subculture In The Balled of Sexual Dependency, Goldin's work focuses on an array of subject matter from drag queens, sexual acts, city sky lines and family llfe. In intimacy, the slide-show Heartbeart will be shown, which was originally commissioned by the Centre Pompidou. This succession or photographs is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Sir John Taverner and pertonned by BJork.
Steve McQueen, who wlll represent Britain at the 2009 Venice Blennale and won the camera d'Or at cannes this year tor the fllm Hunger based on the death of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands.
French artist Sophie cane, who received intematlonal attention at the 2007 Venice Bienaile for the work Take Care of Yourself, where she asked dozens of women to interpret a break-up email from a past lover and presentad the results in the French pavilion.
