STRUCTURES OF DIFFERENCE: PAINTING, SCULTPURE, AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF PAST 50 YEARS
AT THE WADSWORTH ATHENEUM MUSEUM OF ART THROUGH APRIL 13, 2003
A gallimaufry of paintings, photography, and sculpture made during the past 50 years by 37 artists resonates in surprising ways in "Structures of Difference," an exhibition on view at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn., through April 13, 2003.
Crossing boundaries of period, media, style, and culture, "Structures of Difference" reveals exchanges, intersections, hybridizations, and confrontations between late 20th-century innovations ano recent artistic projects.
"This exhibition explores the Idea of difference, and the role it plays in the artist's creation and the viewer's perception of these disparate works" said Nicholas Baume, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art. "The groupings purposefully play with the uses of difference as a structural device, as a thematic focus, or as a perceptual effect."
"Structures of Difference" draws from the permanent collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum and features loans from the Cartin, LeWitt and Sonnabend Collectlons. The artists represented are: Francis Alys, Richard Artschwager, John BaIdessari, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lynda Benglis, Mel Bochner, Jan Dibbets, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Charles Gaines, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Hans Haacke, Duane Hanson, Eva Hesse, Martin Honert, Christian Jankowski, Alfred Jensen, Jasper Johns, Emily Kngwarreye, Sol LeWltt, Roy Lichtenstein, Glenn Ligon, Allan McCollum, Ana Mendieta, Cady Noland, Larraine O'Grady Gloria Petyarre, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Robert Ryman, Lorna Simpson, Robert Smithson, Hiroshi Sugimoto, George TjungarrayI, Mierle Laderman Ukeies, Andy Warhol, and James Welling.
