Blindsight – Manon de Boer in dialogue with Latifa Laâbissi and Laszlo Umbreit
Filmmaker and visual artist Manon de Boer presents a new extensive sound installation, in addition to a presentation of historical work by artists who resonate with her practice.
The starting point of the exhibition are dialogues and environmental sounds from her most recent film Ghost Party (2022), which she realized together with dancer and choreographer Latifa Laâbissi in the Van Wassenhove House designed by Juliaan Lampens. De Boer translates the film's original soundscape, composed by Laszlo Umbreit, into a spatial and acoustic environment that spreads out in the main hall of MDD.
Completing the auditory installation, de Boer made a selection of works by stanley brewn, Andrea Büttner, Lygia Clark, Marlene Dumas, Valeska Gert, Félix González-Torres, Agnes Martin, Louise Lawler, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Joëlle Tuerlinckx, who pieces are defining figures in de Boer's oeuvre. The selected works address fundamental ideas about transformation and creation: by alluding to the experience of the voice, body and objects around us, they change our perspective and perception.
