Sweating Under Cold Water
Artists: Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Gordon Matta-Clark, Gordon Hall, Jinbin Chen
Dates: August 30 – October 18, 2025
Venue: Hua International, Beijing

Hua International is honored to present Sweating Under Cold Water, an exhibition that brings together four artists across generations whose practices reflect on entropy, spatial breakdown, and structural memory. At its core, the exhibition stages an intergenerational dialogue between Gordon Matta-Clark’s photographic records of urban decay, Gordon Hall’s modular sculptures and architectural thinking, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s poetic minimalism, and Jinbin Chen’s meditations on social and material disintegration.

The exhibition considers how physical structures such as walls, buildings, and urban frameworks can reflect both psychological and political conditions. It further explores how processes of fragmentation—whether through architectural cuts, sculptural forms, ephemeral installations, or painterly gestures—become strategies for representation, resilience, and renewal. By bringing these distinct practices into conversation, Sweating Under Cold Water asks how instability, fragility, and rupture can generate new forms of meaning, intimacy, and shared memory.
